A plug valve is a rotary valve with a closing element or plunger shape, which opens or closes by rotating 90 degrees to connect or separate the channel port on the valve plug from the channel port on the valve body.

Description

A plug valve is a quick opening and closing through valve. Due to the wiping effect between the rotating sealing surfaces, it can completely prevent contact with the flowing medium when fully open. Therefore, it is usually used for media with suspended particles. 

Another important feature of it is that it is easy to adapt to multi-channel structures, so that a valve can obtain two, three, or even four different flow channels. This can simplify the design of pipeline systems, reduce valve usage, and require some accessories in equipment.

Principle

The shape of the valve plug can be cylindrical or conical. In a cylindrical valve plug, the channel is generally rectangular; In the conical valve plug, the channel is trapezoidal. These shapes make the structure of the plug valve lightweight. It is most suitable as a medium for cutting off and connecting, as well as for diverting, but sometimes it can also be used for throttling depending on the properties of the application and the erosion resistance of the sealing surface.

Type

Divided by structural form, it includes four types: tight set plug valve, self sealing plug valve, plug valve, and oil injection plug valve.

Divided by channel form, it includes three types: straight through plug valve, three-way plug valve, and four-way plug valve.

Divided by purpose, including: soft seal plug valves, oil lubricated hard seal plug valves, and lift type plug valves.
