The Electric Submarine Progressing Cavity Pump, abbreviated as ESPCP, is a new type of screw pump oil recovery method developed in recent years. The submersible motor driven screw pump system efficiency is over 50%, which is twice that of electric submersible pumps and 14% higher than ordinary screw pumps. It has the advantages of both ordinary screw pumps and electric submersible pumps, while overcoming their shortcomings.

Description

With the gradual deepening of oilfield development, the proportion of heavy oil, sand bearing, and medium to low production wells is increasing. Traditional beam pumping units may experience pump jamming, rod jamming, pump wear, and rod breakage due to the thick oil and sand production, resulting in frequent oil well operations and even production stoppages. Seeking new oil recovery technologies has become a necessary path for the further development of various oil fields. Screw pumps are suitable for discharging viscous liquids and solid-phase liquids, and the flow rate is uniform and stable. However, ground driven screw pumps have not been widely promoted and applied due to problems such as broken rods, worn rods and tubes, and stuck rods caused by the driving rods. In this case, the electric submersible screw pump (ESPCP), which combines the advantages of rodless oil recovery, downhole drive, and screw pump, has received widespread attention.

Electric submersible screw pump is a combination of screw pump (PCP) and electric submersible pump (ESP). Its system efficiency is high, it is suitable for heavy oil, does not cause crude oil emulsification, and is easy to manage. Its role and proportion in heavy oil and sand containing crude oil production are increasing. 

Structure

The main parts and difference of ESPCP are the following.

(1)Submersible motor
The motor efficiency and power factor are relatively low, with a motor efficiency of only 50% and a power factor of only about 60%.

(2)Gear reducer
It is an important component of the submersible screw pump and a distinguishing feature from the electric submersible pump. It is located above the motor. The function of the reducer is to reduce the output speed of the motor to the required speed of the screw pump, with a speed ratio of 3:1 to 9:1.

(3)Protector
The submersible screw pump protector has two functions: one is to protect the motor to prevent well fluid from entering the motor; Another function is to lubricate and protect the reducer to take away the friction heat of the reducer and extend its lifespan. The protector is filled with electric oil. In order to reduce costs, some manufacturers separate the motor protector and reducer protector and fill them with different media. The motor protector is filled with electric oil, and the reducer protector is filled with lubricating oil. For integrated protectors, they are all connected to the upper part of the reducer, and the motor, protector, and reducer all use the same high-performance motor oil. For a split type protector, there are separate protectors for the motor and reducer, located above the motor. The motor and protector are lubricated and cooled with ordinary electric submersible pump motor oil; The reducer protector is connected to the upper part of the reducer, and the reducer and protector use higher quality gear lubricant.

(4)Flexible shaft
The flexible shaft is a key component of the submersible screw pump, which plays an important role in extending the service life of the unit. It is located between the screw pump and the reducer, and its function is to eliminate the eccentric motion and vibration reduction of the rotor, ensuring that the protector, reducer, and motor under it are in good concentric motion. Its structure is simple, essentially a flexible short shaft that can withstand high axial and radial loads and torques. Its radial thrust bearing is made of high-strength tungsten carbide hard alloy steel.

(5)Connection
The screw pumps used in the submersible screw pump unit are basically similar in structure, with the only difference being the connection method. Ordinary screw pumps use threaded connections, while submersible screw pumps use flange bolt connections.

The submersible screw pump oil production system has unique advantages in extracting high viscosity, high wax content, high sand content, and high gas content crude oil, and in inclined wells, horizontal wells, swamp blocks, and offshore platform operations. Its advantages are high pump efficiency, low year-on-year oil production and energy consumption, long pump inspection cycle, low manufacturing costs, and low maintenance costs.
